It’s true what the authors say in their intro: even through mosaic art
has been around for years, it’s now that it has become more popular than ever.
And as a result of this popularity, tools, materials and inspiration are a lot
easier to come by.
Apart from all the wonderful ideas, what’s great about this book is that
the authors make it a really enjoyable read. They’ve got a great sense of
humour and absolutely no delusions of grandeur – I had a good giggle at their
description of how they arrived at the name “Floral Coat Thingy,” for example. They’ve also made mistakes, and they’re happy
to admit it and translate their experiences into handy hints, which accompany
all the projects.
The book starts with a really useful introduction containing all the
tools and materials you’ll need to get started. Interestingly, most of the
things you’ll need you’ll already have in your home – toothpicks, old credit
cards, butter knives, tweezers and broken china are only a few. The only things
you’ll really need to buy are adhesives, grouting, a tile cutter and any
pretties you’d like to mosaic. But don’t take my word for it – go see for
yourself.
From there, you can choose projects for the living room, dining room,
kitchen, bathroom, work and play areas, and outdoors. My favourite project is
the Piggy Bread Box, the Willow Pattern Tray and the Flower Pot; not to mention
the Floral Coat Thingy.
The verdict? A great all-round choice for someone like me (I only
recently grouted my first mosaic heart) or for someone more experienced.
